Opening week of the George Town Festival runs from 28-30 July and starts the show with a bang! Music lovers shouldn’t miss Svara (a play on the Malay word for voice, ‘suara’) ASEAN (28-29 July) as the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra and other local and regional vocal talents set the stage for the festival to come.

Slip into the shoes of Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos and learn about Filipino history in Off-Broadway show Livin’ La Vida Imelda (28 July). Also check out Journey to George Town (29-30 July), a child-friendly play that sees the four original characters from the famous Chinese work ‘Journey to the West' explore the city and tackle its environmental problems.

The Macam-Macam ASEAN market (29-30 July) also makes our list – everything here is Made in ASEAN. Shop at the all-day handicraft market, taste 20 types of laksas from all over Southeast Asia, and watch evening performances including a Star Wars-inspired shadow puppet show and a traditional Hokkien potehi glove puppet show about olden-day Penang.

Exhibition-wise, hop over to look at Chorus (28-29 July, 5-6 Aug), an installation of giant kinetic sculptures that create a light-up ‘celestial choir’ at night. Don’t miss out on the Before They Pass Away (28 July-27 Aug) exhibition by photojournalist Jimmy Nelson, who takes portraits of tribal and indigenous people. He also holds a photography workshop (28 July) and a talk (30 July) for the occasion.
