Q: I don’t want to cook on Christmas Day. Where can I take the family for a festive meal on 25 December?
A: It’s a great idea to not slave over the stove on Christmas Day and instead to relax and enjoy a meal out with the family. There are a wide variety of options available—so many that I can’t mention them all—but here is a selection of the best.
The Grand Hyatt will be offering its excellent Sunday Brunch menu at Thirty8, which includes fresh seafood, dim sum and wok fried dishes with additional seasonal fare including turkey and, of course, Brussels sprouts! The kids can enjoy face painting and a clown. The brunch runs from 12:30 to 3:30pm and costs RM280++ per person for food, soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee. Kids under six dine free while it’s RM140++ for those between six and 12. Champagne can be ordered and paid for separately.
The Mandarin Oriental tell me they are already half full in spite of being the most expensive Christmas buffet in town. Their three restaurants, Mosaic, Lounge on the Park and The Mandarin Grill, will all combine forces to offer a massive selection of tempting festive food. You can choose a table in one of the restaurants and then visit the various food stations spread through all the restaurants to choose your food. There is a dedicated children’s entertainment room where kids can enjoy their own mini buffet. Santa is expected to pay a visit and there will be nannies on duty to take care of the little ones.
Christmas lunch here will cost RM328++ for food, while children under four eat free with those between four and 11 paying half price. They have three packages for drinks: Option 1 is RM58++ for soft drinks and juices, Option 2 is RM128++ for soft drinks, juices plus beer and house pouring wines; and Option 3 is RM348++ for soft drinks, juices, beer, wines and free-flow Moet Chandon. If you want to spend the day here book soon—and be warned you have to pay in full at time of booking to secure your table.
Head to Prego at The Westin KL for their Christmas Day Champagne Brunch where they promise you can relax with a glass of bubbly and enjoy an exquisite Christmas buffet with good food and great company. The brunch costs RM168++ per person for food only, RM198++ per person inclusive of free unlimited soft drinks and chilled juices, RM276++ per person inclusive of unlimited chilled juices, selected wine, beer and soft drinks, and RM376++ per person inclusive of unlimited Champagne and selected alcoholic beverages.
Alternatively if its going to take all day to open the presents you can enjoy a Christmas Day Hi-Tea Buffet at The Living Room. They promise live stations ranging from a seafood bar featuring a wide variety of fresh seafood, a Japanese bar with sushi and sashimi, a carvery station with coffee crusted beef of rib eye and much more. Price: RM108++ per person. For an additional RM60++ per person, enjoy unlimited red and white wine.
Or when in Asia… go Asian for Christmas Day and try the Five Senses Restaurant Christmas Day Dim Sum Buffet where you can enjoy freshly prepared dim sum and Hong Kong style roasted pork belly and honey glazed ham. Price: RM118++ per person for food only, RM130++ per person inclusive of unlimited soft drinks and Chinese tea, RM166++ per person inclusive of unlimited chilled juices, beer and soft drinks, and RM196++ per person inclusive of unlimited chilled juices, selected wine, beer and soft drinks.
The Majestic’s Christmas themed Christmas Lunch Buffet runs from 12 to 2:30pm in the Contango restaurant. The little ones will be able to enjoy decorating gingerbread men. It costs RM128++ and includes soft drinks, tea and coffee. Pay an extra RM45++ for free flow wine and beer. Champagne can be ordered a la carte. Children aged three to 12 dine for half price.
Hilton Kuala Lumpur (at KL Sentral) is offering two options for Christmas Day. The Graze Restaurant, which will be open from 11am to 3:30pm, will have a Christmas themed set menu which includes a carvery with turkey (of course) as well as other meats. This option costs RM142++ per adult for food, children under five eat for free, and children between five and 11 dine for RM90++.
Vasco's, the venue for their regular Sunday brunches, will have a Christmas Day brunch costing RM168++. Again, children under five eat free, and children between five and 11 dine for RM90++.
For either venue add to the price of the food RM30++ for free flow soft drinks, RM150++ free flow wine and beer or RM250++ for free flow Champagne. Neither option offers any special children’s entertainment or activities.
The Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur also has two options for Christmas Day: the Lemon Garden Café will be offering a Christmas buffet for RM160++ per adult. Kids below six years old eat free and kids six to 12 years old eat for RM80++ (with a max of two kids per family at that price). There is no free flow option—if you want drinks you order them and pay for them as normal. There will be children’s entertainment in the form of a clown, sand art, painting, cookie decorating and more.
Lafite, Shangri-La KL’s fine dining restaurant, will be offering a deluxe festive buffet with an array of luxurious foods. The price for this is RM210++ per adult, half price for children. This seems like it will be a more formal atmosphere with no children’s activities. Again, no free flow—order and pay for your drinks on top of the cost of the food.
The Intercontinental is well known for its Sunday brunches and will be offering a Christmas Day brunch from 12 to 3pm at Serena Brasserie. There will be children’s activities in the kids’ corner including cup cake decorating and a clown. The price per adult is RM225 including hot beverages, RM275++ for free flow sparkling wine, beer, wine and standard pour liquors. Children below six years old eat free, those between six and 12 years dine for RM112.50++.
Cesar's at The Ritz-Carlton KL will be offering a festive brunch. There will be children’s activities, story telling, Santa and more. The price for the buffet is RM198++ per adult, RM98++ for children aged five to 12 years, with four-year-olds and under eating for free. For RM298++ you can enjoy free flow wine or for RM368++ spend the day drinking free flow Dom Perignon!
If you don’t want to go to a large five-star hotel then Neroteca on Jalan Ceylon might be a good alternative. They are offering an Italian festive feast which will include anti pasta, fish, seafood, pasta etc. Rather than a conventional buffet, the food will be served ‘family style’ to your table. There will be live music and a DJ plus lucky draws. They are offering an early bird discount for booking made before 11 December: RM108++ per adult, RM220++ with free flow Proseco, white and red wine and RM50++ for children under 12. Book after 11 December and prices are RM128++ per adult, RM269++ with free flow and RM50 per child.
If you prefer to celebrate with a special meal out on Christmas Eve or New Years Eve many of these same venues will also be offering special meals and buffets then. Call the outlets to check details and prices.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
[If you are going to stay home on Christmas Day you can still make things easy by picking up a cooked turkey and all the trimmings. I'll tell you who is offering those next week!]
