Expatriate Captains of Industry

As expats we find ourselves constantly moving around the world. For some it’s the first time living away from the motherland; for many, it’s a veritable merry-go-round of new countries, jobs, schools and friendships. Being an expat can be exciting and fulfilling but it also presents a new scope of challenges and these can be even more pronounced if you’re leading a multi-national company with thousands of people reporting to you.

Yet many of Malaysia’s biggest organisations and brands are led by internationals. These Captains of Industry are creating new inroads for international business in Southeast Asia. They are a dynamic, ambitious group of expat executives who see the country as a market with huge potential.

Here's what the leaders of Tesco, Standard Chartered and McCann Erickson in Malaysia had to say.

GEORG FISCHER
CEO, Tesco Malaysia

“I’ve been very fortunate to have had the chance to work in France, Switzerland and Belgium. When Tesco approached me about heading up their operations in Malaysia, it was an offer that meant new international opportunities in an exciting growth area.”

SAIF MALIK
MD and Country Head of Corporate & Institutional Clients, Standard Chartered Malaysia

“Understanding people and working among them is one of my strongest motivations—whether it’s staff or clients. I have two very important facets: trust and respect. I truly believe that it is the foundation to my own growth and has helped me to where I am today.”

MICHAEL CONSTANTINE
President and CEO, McCann Erickson Malaysia

“People can be skeptical about diversity here, but we try to be entirely above that. This company employs people from many ethnic backgrounds, as it should be. Most brands have to work across all cultures and my personal global background and my staff has helped immensely in that respect.”
