A quote on the wall at Impulse Studio in Changkat by one of my favorite athletes, Allen Iverson, says "I train hard to be better than me yesterday." However, even that great American Basketball Hall Of Famer has probably never seen or experienced a training regimen quite like the one offered at Impulse Studios.
I am not a traditional gym person. I do laps in the morning around KLCC Park and then continue walking throughout the day for my workout. For these reasons, I was definitely skeptical as I stepped into Impulse for the first time. Thankfully, Impulse is far from your traditional gym. What followed was one of the most unique, intense, and - to be honest - awesome workouts I've ever had.
When you first walk into their Changkat studios, you are immediately taken by its size. Not by how big it is, like other massive gyms, but simply how small it is. It definitely had me wondering, "how is this going to work?" But don't let the size fool you! Impulse is a gym and then some.
Impulse Studio is unique for its use of Electric Muscle Stimulation, or EMS for short, which it says "reproduces the body's natural process of voluntary muscular contraction with 'optimal' electrical impulses'. After you take a fitness test to see what kind of intensity you can handle, they put you in an enormous electrical suit. It felt like I was about to start playing a virtual reality video game, but the suit has a more important purpose to fulfill. Through the cables, you are then hooked up to a specialised workout machine - and this is where the fun begins.
Impulse does its work via Electric Muscle Stimulation, or EMS for short. The machine you are hooked up to sends electrical impulses through your body, and the very helpful and friendly staff adjust the stimulation based on how you may or may not react to the feeling. The best way to describe the sensation is that it’s akin to being heavily tickled and mildly shocked at the same time.
Now imagine that feeling as you are doing lunges, or trying to hold a plank, or even crunches. It's one of the wildest feelings you can imagine and will almost certainly leave you in a pool of sweat. For 25 minutes, the workout tests you, pushes you to your limit, and in an instant you're done. While you may think 25 minutes once a week isn’t enough of a fitness rush, you might be mistaken, but I am certainly going to test this proposition out over the next few weeks.
Gym rats may assume that the standard hour workout every day is difficult, but try putting your muscles and strength through the rigours of intense electric stimulation. It is one of the most rewarding workouts you could possibly go through. Impulse Studio may not be for the faint of heart with its stimulators but for anyone willing to accept the challenge of an unconventional but definitely awesome workout, it is highly recommended.
