Featured on a recent viral stand-up comedy called ‘MALAYSIA Mischief’, Captain Khalid is debuting his own show highlighting his unique brand of storytelling, improvisation and comedic talent. Of Tanzanian descent and based in Germany, Captain Khalid will be here on 25 January at PJ Live Arts with part two of his ‘I Think I Am Single’ show. Known for his spot-on jokes on typical Malaysian scenarios – his famed monologue about how every Malaysian thinks all Africans are from Nigeria is very funny – this show promises big laughs. No Black Tie Presents Orquesta Yambeque
Performing salsa, cumbia and Latin jazz on the No Black Tie stage on 18 and 19 January is Orquesta Yambeque. Led by Colombia-born percussionist and bandleader Mateo Lorenzo, Orquesta Yambeque is Perth’s premier Latin Jazz Band. The band performs music from legendary musicians like Tito Puente and Ray Barretto as well as interpretations of traditional Latin music from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the 70s and the golden era of salsa in New York and Puerto Rico. Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival 2019
Head to klpac on 18-20 January for the 6th Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival. During the day there will be a jazz clinic with classes for vocals, trumpet, piano, saxophone and a forum. Admission to this is free so come early as seating is limited. There will be different nightly concerts featuring college and school bands on the first night, and a great selection of new talent (GL Trio and Medusa) and Malaysian jazz legends (Michael Veerapen Trio ft. Junji Delfino) on the following nights. Regular price tickets are RM75 / day or RM203 for a 3-day pass while students enter for RM30 or RM103 for 3-day pass.

Two Mountains Photography Project 3.0
This exhibition is a ‘joint friendship’ photography project initiated by Steven Lee of KLPA Events and Naoko Ohta from KLEE, INC PARIS TOKYO. With the iconic Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Kinabalu in Sabah in mind, they have selected photographers from each country to showcase images about these respected peaks. Through this cross-cultural project, they hope to highlight the many legends, folklore and traditions from each mountain to the public. The exhibition features images from Nadirah Zakariya, Nana Safiana, Stacy Liu, Atsushi Okuyama, Mikio Hasui, and Yuki Morita. This exhibition is on from now until 27 January, on the 3rd floor of the ILHAM Gallery.

An Evening with David Rocco

Thaipusam
One of the world’s most vibrant and interesting festivals happens on 21 January. Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus to honour and pay penance to Lord Murugan, and the best places to witness this is at Batu Caves in Gombak and Penang. Processions start the afternoon before when the chariots carrying Lord Murugan go through the streets of Penang from Queen Street to the Waterfall Hilltop Temple, and the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in KL to Batu Caves in KL. Devotees carry kavadis and get are pierced through their cheeks and back to give thanks and show atonement. More than 1.5 million people head to Batu Caves on this day so make sure you plan ahead.
