Publika plays host to the largest jazz festival in Kuala Lumpur this 23-24 August with a record line-up of 150 local and international jazz talents performing at three venues. Performances will be held at The Square, Black Box, The Bee and a jam session at The Social.
From Indonesia comes R.I.M.A. (Renew In Mind and Attitude), a band specialising in funk and dance; and Parkdrive who mix jazz, pop, R&B, soul and funk with Brazilian rhythms. From Australia comes singer-songwriter Gabriel Lynch, who is known for his versatile style; and Rodrigo Parejo, a multifaceted experimental Spanish jazz musician will be performing on the first day. Martin Reyes from Colombia is another international singer who has performed at salsa festivals all over the world.
Sharing the stage with these great international performers will be a host of the best local bands and singers. These include Big Band Story, a large jazz ensemble known for playing big band tunes, folk Malay jazz and swing. Be sure to watch the Aseana Percussion Unit who create electrifying music using traditional Malaysian instruments; and Funkatorie, a soul-funk-jazz band led by music director and keyboardist, Hin Ee Jeng.
These are just some of the acts performing at this free festival, which promises to be a weekend of amazing music. As performances start in the evening, make a night of it – have dinner, hang out and enjoy the music! Check the schedule here to make sure you know who’s performing where and when.
