Malibu
The founders of this label had visions of palm trees, beaches, poolside lounging and piña coladas when they came up with the idea of sourcing and creating beach and swimwear. Malibu is an independent brand offering in-house designs following the latest trends. The pieces are versatile enough to be worn on the beach or by the pool, and carry you through to sunset cocktails. Sizes are catered more for the Asian figure, but measurements are clearly stated so be sure to check. Bikinis and swimsuits are available in easy-to-wear colours and prints, and resort wear features chic tunics and kaftans. The current collection garners inspiration from getaways to Bali with contemporary prints and effortless lines.

Pink N’ Proper
Filling the gap for mix-and-match swimwear, Pink N’ Proper offers a selection of basic bikini tops and bottoms in various designs, colours and prints. Prices are reasonable and sizes tend to run to fit the Asian physique. They also carry a modest swimwear line and a varied range of swimsuits from halters to off-the-shoulder ruffles. This online store also sells bags, beach hats, beach wear (wraps and cover-ups) and floats for kids and adults. Their latest collection sees the addition of turban swim caps, pom pom kaftans, beach net bags in primary colours, wide brimmed straw hats and customisable boaters.

La Bumba
Founders Rufina (a former national sailor) and Hannah (a law graduate) have a true love of the beach and sea and have translated that into a swimwear label. Named after that great song by Richie Valens but with a play on words for all those beach bums out there, La Bumba has everything from cheeky (literally!) one-pieces to bikinis featuring minimal to maximum bottom coverage and several designs for tops. What sets this brand apart is the inclusion of plus-size designs, including cute bikinis. Prices are very friendly and there is free delivery within Malaysia for orders above RM100.

Owl By Dowlani
Founder and designer, Nikita Dowlani, wanted to create a brand that highlighted her hand-painted textiles, so she channelled her vibrant prints into resort and swimwear. Her experiences of diverse cultures have made their way into her collections, which represent her favourite parts of these worlds – the colours of India, the laughter of Malaysia, the synergy of Singapore, and the chaos of London. Each piece is hand-painted and translated from paper to fabric, and this process can take up to four months. Bikinis and swimsuits are bright and tropical, and sizing is according to normal standards, i.e. small is UK size 6/8, medium is UK size 8/10, etc. Pick up a matching tunic, kaftan, kimono or sarong for chic poolside costumes that transform seamlessly to bar outfits for the evening.

Bikini Tari
The founder of this cheeky and lively swimwear label is Lissy Tari, who is originally from Indonesia but started Bikini Tari in Malaysia when she realised there was a lack of fun swimwear in the market. These pieces focus on shape, movement and function. Tops can be worn as a sports bra and bottoms are designed to give the impression of a smaller waist and longer legs. The braiding details found on all the pieces from bikini top straps to bikini bottom sides are done by hand. This season, pastel combinations of lilac, yellow and turquoise are prominently featured.
