A celebration of Scottish culture right here in tropical Kuala Lumpur – that’s what the Highland Games are all about. Now in its fifth year, the Highland Games are organised by the Selangor St. Andrew’s Society, which was founded in 1887 and is one of the oldest in KL. If you’re wondering what Scotland and Malaysia have in common; quite a lot surprisingly from the early days of the establishment of the plantations till now with the oil and gas industry.
This year’s Kuala Lumpur Highland Games (KLHG) will take place on 13 May at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort. A highlight of the Games are the bagpipe and drum bands competing for top honours. This year will see pipe bands from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and Brunei performing with internationally accredited judges brought in specially by the Society.

Another real crowd-pleaser is the Scottish ‘heavies’ (professional strongmen), who give quite a performance in their kilts participating in traditional events like caber tossing (a rather large pole thrown as far as possible), shot putting and hammer throwing. There’s also an exciting junior rugby tournament with 60 local teams of all ages including U18s, and the famous Tug Of War competition, which really gets the crowd going.
This is a fantastic day out for the family as there’s a great kids’ play area with games, rides and inflatables to ensure the little ones are entertained all day and a wide variety of food stalls will cater to everyone’s F&B needs. Mark the date in your calendar and be sure to check it out. After all, it’s not often you get to see men in kilts throwing cabers around!
Tickets are available now at the Selangor St. Andrew's Society's website and can be also bought at the entrance on the day for RM20 (adults) and RM10 (children under 12).
Date: 13 May, 8am-4pm. Official opening ceremony at 12noon.
