Bingka
There are certain brands, types of Malaysian food and everyday items that we’re very familiar with and Bingka have created fantastic silkscreen prints depicting them. Their range of products includes tea towels, bags, cushions, pouches and place mats in vibrant colours with prints of heritage buildings, the KL skyline and popular local kuih. The art is whimsical and original, and the items make for excellent gifts. Catch them at markets and pop-up stores (schedule on their site) around the city, order online or find them at selected retailers around the country.

Serasi
Serasi began in the kitchen of Intan Halim who wanted to make natural, chemical-free face and body products for herself and her family after realising many off-the-counter products were full of chemicals and can cause skin problems for some people. Serasi’s range includes face cleansers, sun block, soaps, deodorant, serums, scrubs, moisturisers and calming vapour oils. Natural ingredients like coconut oil, peppermint, organic oats, calendula, organic honey, lemongrass and cocoa powder are used in these chemical- / paraben- / synthetic preservative-free products. Purchase online and check their Facebook page for information on pop-up stores.

Naiise
While not exactly a homegrown Malaysian brand (it was originally a gift store in Singapore), Naiise is a collective of over 50 local brands including their own designs, ranging from quirky to chic. Nostalgia and all the things Malaysians hold dear are the main theme here, so you’ll find cushions in the shape of a curry puff or local kuih, nasi lemak t-shirts, vintage gunny sack pillow cases, soy candles in local fragrances, stationery, toiletries and home décor. Order online or visit their shop at the very cool Zhongshan building in Kampung Attap.

This material is enjoying a huge resurgence and these bags are ideal for boho chic fans as well as anyone who likes a more natural approach to fashion. Apom
The word apom refers to a popular pancake and is the name of this homegrown label whose specialty is a quirky portrayal of local culture. Typical Malaysian words and phrases like walao (wow!), kepochi (busybody), syok sendiri (full of one’s self) and chup (a word used to reserve a place) are printed on t-shirts, totes, baby rompers and mugs. These are great as gifts for Malaysians and those who have been living here long enough to understand that when we say “On the way”, it means we’re still getting ready!
