5 Tips For Pet Boarding

Your plane tickets and hotels are booked, suitcases are packed, visas are ready – but who’s going to look after Fluffy while you’re gone? If placing your pet with a friend or relative isn’t an option, it’s always worthwhile putting them in a good pet boarding facility, where they can mix with other pets and be pampered while you’re off enjoying some quality vacation time. Experienced staff and quality amenities can make the experience just as fun for them, and you can rest easy knowing Fluffy is in good hands.

1. Check out the boarding facility
Photos and online reviews can’t beat a personal visit to see if the schedules, environment and food are up to scratch. If necessary, this is also the time to see if it is equipped to care for pets with medical conditions or disabilities.

2. Book early
Hotels aren’t the only ones that fill up over the holidays! Start looking for pet boarding facilities and making reservations for your pet a few months before your intended vacation – especially if it’s during the festive season.

3. Update your pet’s vaccinations
In order to protect the health of all pets at the boarding facility, most places will require that your pet gets their vaccinations updated – worming, flea and tick protection are just the basics. Make sure to check with the staff.

4. Prep your pet
If your pet has never been boarded before, try placing the pet in the facility for a trial night or two to familiarise them with it. Crate training is also encouraged to get them used to enclosed spaces. Also, don’t make a fuss when saying goodbye!

5. Bring all their favourite things
It’s a good idea to bring along your pet’s favourite things from home, such as a toy, a blanket, or even their bed. Having something familiar with them in new surroundings will help your pet cope with separation anxiety.
