The simplest way to describe Nathalie Gourmet Studio’s latest dining project is that you dine in a special box with nine other people, and thanks to technology, your senses will then be assailed visually, aurally and orally.

Whimsy is a multi-sensory fine dining experience and it really is enjoyable. For two hours, diners are immersed in a series of different themes ranging from outer space and the woods to the circus and even under the sea. And while it may make no sense, that’s the point of the overall theme of ‘whimsy’ – playful, extravagant and a touch bizarre.

Everyone sits together so you could be placed next to a stranger (unless you book out the whole room of 10 seats), which is great as you’ll find yourself chatting about the food, wine and how peculiar it is eating off a pixelated table. Everything around you – table and walls – is a digital canvas depicting a virtual wonderland. Even your hostess for the evening is an avatar of sorts!

The five-course meal is themed to what’s happening around you, so the first starter is called The Red Planet and is Momotaro tomato with mozzarella cream and basil pesto. Visually it looks like… Saturn. This is followed by In The Woods, a compelling combination of foie gras, truffle, porcini mushroom, artichoke and duck.

The third starter is a triumph called Under Water where a Hokkaido scallop nestles in a shell with a poached oyster. Then the main (organic chicken stuffed with lobster with risotto) arrives just in time for the circus to hit the room. By now you’re wondering, what’s going to happen next? Well, dessert, in the form of a green apple filled with preserved apple mousse, fennel, dill and a cocoa crust. There are drink pairing options at different prices – with Château de Lafont wines, Grand Cru Classe or Martell cognacs.

If you’re looking for a truly unique dining experience, this is it. Go with your foodie friends who enjoy fine wine and make a night of it. Chef Nathalie Arbefeuille is genuinely talented so you know you’re in for a treat.
