The trend of bars focusing on a specific type of drink continues with The Flowerpecker. While gin has been on the forefront recently (with bars like Pahit in Kuala Lumpur), this bar focuses on vermouth, an aromatised wine flavoured with seeds, herbs, spices, roots and bark. It’s a classic drink originating in the northern Italian city of Turin (of the Shroud fame) in the 18th century, so it’s interesting to see a resurgence of it here.
There’s a succinct collection of this fortified wine at The Flowerpecker, which makes it unique in recent openings. If you’re not sure what to try first, the Antica Formula Carpano – a rich Italian red vermouth – is a good one to start with. Or indulge in a flight of three (red, white, dry) for a complete tasting experience.
If cocktails are your thing, a classic Negroni is a must. Here it’s made with Citadelle Réserve gin, Campari and a vermouth of your choice. Or try the Carpano Bianco Highball made with a shot of semi-sweet vermouth topped with either soda water or ginger ale.
And here’s something you don’t see every day – the bar is vegan-friendly to complement food served at neighbours Barat Mediterranean and The Ganga Café, which are two of the more famous vegetarian / vegan restaurants in town. It also opens from 10.30am, making it a rare daytime bar, which is why its drinks are low-ABV (alcohol by volume).
The interior is very comfortable and looks like someone’s airy chic living room – the ideal place to hang out for early drinks instead of going out after dark. The bar opens from 10.30am to 12midnight daily, with a break from 3pm to 5pm on weekdays.
