Bees are an essential part of the ecosystem and pollinate 80% of the world’s fruit and vegetables! Bar Trigona at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur have created a unique ‘Save the Bees’ programme to help protect endangered bee populations. In keeping with its philosophy of sustainability, Bar Trigona sources its honey in small batches from local farmers; and many of the famed cocktails here comprise ingredients from small Malaysian farms.
Since habitat loss is driving the decline of their populations, one solution is to protect local sanctuaries for bees – which is exactly what Bar Trigona is doing with this initiative. “Honeybees are an integral part of our story, so this is an issue that is very close to our hearts,” explained head bartender Ashish Sharma. The bar is named after the stingless Trigona honeybee, which lives in the tropical jungles of Malaysia and produces some of the world’s most sought-after honey.
Bar Trigona guests can now adopt a hive of honeybees, located at Dino’s Kelulut Organic Farm in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. For an annual contribution of RM500, you will receive six jars of artisanal honey (worth over RM1,000 at market price) from your hive, a bottle of bee propolis, an adoption certificate and quarterly updates on how the bees are doing. Your contribution will go towards preserving honeybee habitats, promoting natural bee keeping methods and supporting the future of this cottage industry.
