Awadhi, or North Indian Frontier, cuisine is derived from the influences of the Mughals and the nomadic tribes of Afghanistan and Persia, which brought unique, rugged flavours to Indian food. For example, the tribes came with the tandoor (a clay oven heated with wood or charcoal) and the Mughals with the use of dates and nuts. The dishes prepared at Qureshi are derived from the ‘Dum Pukht’ cuisine of the Nawabs – in other words royal cuisine that was served at royal courts centuries ago.

If you’re wondering what to order, highly recommended dishes include the Gosht Biryani – basmati rice cooked with tender mutton and flavoured with saffron and cardamom – and the Hyderabadi Nihari, which are lamb shanks slow cooked in its cardamom-infused juices and marrow, finished with saffron. Obviously, their naans and rotis are outstanding and make the perfect accompaniment to any of the curries, especially their famed Butter Chicken.
