Think of Penang and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Food, heritage and culture – most probably in that order! If it’s food you’re after, the Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) – Apr 14-29 – is a celebration of all things gastronomic from one of the most interesting islands in the world. Street food here is legendary and the result of centuries of history and culture. From its days as a British colony and major trading port to the combination of different ingredients and cooking techniques courtesy of the Malay, Indian and Chinese people who settled there, it’s always been about the food.
The food scene is Penang is dominated by hawker dishes, but there’s also an innovative upcoming movement of contemporary fusion cuisine. The PIFF’s aim is to highlight everything Penang has to offer in terms of food, from the best street stalls and food trucks to quirky venues and the new wave of cooking. Here are some events you can expect from this highly anticipated festival.
