Malaysia’s turning 60, the long weekend is almost upon us and it’s party time! Gather your friends and hit up these places for some Merdeka-eve fun. All events happen on 30 August unless otherwise indicated.
KUALA LUMPUR AND PETALING JAYA
What: This is the place to be for the Merdeka Eve celebrations. It’s all happening at the Esplanade – a performance by the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, ‘Speed Painter’ Haze Long and performers Alif Satar and Alyah. An eight-minute fireworks show caps the night off!
Le Noir KL
What: You’ll have the perfect view of the Merdeka fireworks from the Roof Terrace or the Club Lounge VIP balconies at Le Noir KL. DJ NESH/DJ Hawk/MC Kal (Fairuz) in the Club Lounge, while Circuitbreaker x Kuma will play on the Roof Terrace.
When: The bar and roof terrace opens at 5pm and entrance is free; the Club Lounge opens at 11pm and may have a cover charge.
What: DJ Melissa Jo takes the turntables as you enjoy one of the best views of the Twin Towers – and the Merdeka fireworks – while you dance to the beat.
Promotions: Margarita Slushies at RM30 from 6-10pm; 6-shot cocktail special at RM90 and two bottles of Don Julio at RM700, both all night long.
View Rooftop Bar
What: Countdown to Merdeka Day with a live band performance by Chemistry! Entrance fee is RM35 inclusive of one drink; ladies enter free.
Promotions: Complimentary drink for ladies (gin and tonic or vodka cranberry); 1-for-1 wine bottle purchase all night long.
What: A full lineup of exciting DJs, face painting, dancing, drinking and fireworks – what’s not to like? The dress code is ‘Freedom’. Entry is RM30 for Terrace at level 31, and it’s RM30 for Box at level 32 before 3am and RM40 after 3am.
What: Enjoy the latest tunes with a live DJ, test your Merdeka knowledge with a quiz, get lucky (maybe!) with a bottle lucky draw and sample custom Merdeka cocktails and shooters as you count down to the big 6-0 at DC Mall.
The Bee, Publika
What: Catch two highly-rated local films, Sepet (30 August) and Redha (31 August) at The Bee in Publika this Merdeka celebration. After each screening, there will be a panel discussion with filmmakers and activists (‘Autism in Malaysia’ on 30 August and ‘Our Malaysian Obsession with Race’ on 31 August) along with a Blank Canvas session where the audience suggests discussion topics. Price is RM35 with one free drink.
When: 7.15pm (30-31 August)
What: The musical Merdeka Show at Merdekarya will feature cultural fusion band Nadir, instrumental psych rockers Skits, nusantara rockers Runs, and Azmyl Yunor and Orkes Padu to count down. Entry is RM15 with a one drink minimum purchase.
When: 6pm to late (show starts at 9pm)

Stratosphere at The Roof
What: Drink and dance the night away with 360 degree views of Klang Valley! DJ Edz and a percussionist will provide the beats as you spin the Merdeka Madness Wheel for prizes, challenge friends to a game of beer pong or just lounge around until midnight for the fireworks display. Entry is RM50.
Promotions: First 100 people get free entry; buy one free one drinks from 7pm to 8pm.
Hin Bus Depot
What: Technically all this happens on and after Merdeka Day, but the Mini Merdeka Festival is worth checking out to join in the fun. There’ll be graffiti and brush calligraphy workshops, figure drawing open sessions, paint parties, secret film screenings, pop-up markets and more.
