The Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) in Penang follows the British curriculum culminating in IGCSE and A Level qualifications. With 24 nationalities in attendance, POWIIS is one of the top schools in the northern region. The POWIIS English Language Entry Programme (PELEP) was introduced last year and was a great success. The programme facilitates the entrance to secondary school for students with an initial limited command of the language.
The programme aims to ensure that when students enter Year 7, 8 or 9 (aged 11+-13+ as of 1 April), they are prepared and confident enough to begin their studies at POWIIS. For 2019, students who complete Year 6 or its equivalent in their own countries in February or March 2019 can apply for the programme. Upon acceptance they will be required to board at the school, which is an excellent introduction to the campus and its many facilities.
PELEP students will be accompanied by one specialist English development teacher for most of their classroom time. One of the biggest advantages of this programme is that they will also be able to participate in age-appropriate activities in the school. Special care and supervision will be given especially in the evenings at the boarding houses, and they will be able to enjoy the company of the other boarders.
This is a great educational experience and paves the way for future POWIIS students to become familiar with the school and its boarding facilities, get involved in student activities, make new friends, discover Penang and most importantly, improve their English so they begin school with confidence.
