The Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) was established in 2011 and has rapidly developed into one of the region’s leading schools. The school gained international recognition last year when it was selected as Tes’s (formerly known as Times Educational Supplement) International School of the Year. Building on the school’s reputation for academic excellence, pastoral care and breadth of opportunity, September 2019 sees the highly anticipated opening of the purpose-built primary campus in Tanjung Bungah.
Children aged three to 11 will be offered an academically rigorous curriculum with a focus on sports, modern languages and the creative and performing arts. Supported by excellent facilities, children will move from a play-based Early Years environment to a specialist-taught upper primary programme.
As well as creating an environment where children will thrive cognitively, socially and emotionally, POWIIS Primary’s teachers and rich curriculum place emphasis on nurturing and developing individual passions. Based on the English National Curriculum, the enhanced programme equips students with the skills, knowledge, understanding and attitudes needed to take on the challenges of an ever-changing world. While competency in English and Mathematics remains at the heart of the curriculum, the children will learn through theme-based integrated topics and experiential elements such as performance, public speaking, philosophy and outdoor education.
Attitude is everything when faced with new challenges. Children at POWIIS Primary will be encouraged to persevere, have courage, collaborate, work hard, be kind to themselves and others, as well as develop their leadership skills through community projects, the School Council and the House structure.
After-school and weekend activities are an important element to consider when developing a sense of community and POWIIS Primary will offer a range of enriching activities from the outset. These activities will provide opportunities for students to cultivate friendships, improve their skills and explore new interests.
Exceptional teaching staff, outstanding pastoral care and good communication are fundamental aspects of any good school – all of which will ensure families enjoy a positive school experience. For more information and to organise a school visit, head to their website.
