Penang International Food FestivalUntil 30 Apr 2017
Char kuay teow, laksa, cendol, putu mayam, murtabak – Penang is overflowing with tasty local dishes to sample, which is why it’s regularly hailed by many as the food mecca of Malaysia. Over the next two weeks, foodies will have even more reason to flock to Penang as the inaugural Penang International Food Festival rolls into town!
Running from 15-30 April, the festival brings together a plethora of activities, markets, workshops and – of course – food from all over Penang. The celebration kicks off in the evening with the Street Food Festival at Lebuh Pantai from 5-11pm, where you’ll get to sample the down-to-earth street cuisine that put Penang on the world culinary map.
It’s replaced by the RM2 Mini Food Carnival on Sunday morning (Sunday brunch for RM2? What’s not to love?) from 7am to 1pm, also on Lebuh Pantai. Highlights of the week to come include an urban farm tour on Monday, a Malay cuisine cooking class at Tropical Spice Garden on Wednesday, a tour around Chowrasta Market on Friday and the Taste of Penang festival at Jalan Kelawai on Saturday.
The second week begins with an afternoon Down To Earth Life Market 2.0 at Straits Court on Sunday 23 April, where you’ll find organic produce and paper making; then there’re dining opportunities at Real Food, Farquhar Mansion and Indigo at The Blue Mansion in the first half of the week, the 500 Calorie Run on Thursday and the Fringe Food Festival to wrap up the weekend from Friday onwards at Gurney Paragon Mall.
Other assorted food-related events include a session with a barista, wooden kitchenware workshops, food films, latte art championships, Muslim-friendly food tours and more. Check out piff.com.my or the Penang International Food Festival's Facebook page for the full schedule, and don’t forget to come with empty tummies!
