SOHOM's Fundraising Movie Night
Tue 28 Feb
Feeling generous and would like to reach out to the underprivileged? Well, here's your opportunity to do just that and support a noble cause.
Set to roll out on Tuesday, 28 February as a charity initiative in the form of a fundraising movie night, The Association of Spouses of Heads of Missions in Malaysia presents the exclusive screening of The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep.
Event details:
The Movie: The Iron Lady
Cast: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Alexandra Roach
Director: Phyllida Lloyd
The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century's most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world.
The Cause: The Chin Refugee School
Life is not easy for refugee children. They are not eligible to attend public school. Their education depends on those who care and want these children to grow up productively with the possibility of bettering their lives.
The Chin Student Organisation (CSO) Learning Centre (formed by Chin refugees) is located along Jalan Loke Yew. The school is located on the top floor of a 2 ½ - 3-room low-income apartment building. They group children (ages 5 - 17, total number of students: 100) according to ability and their age.
The rooms are crowded and children often sit on the floor. There is no room to play. There are only 6 teachers. These teachers are volunteers (unsalaried refugees from the same community who live on the premises in the classrooms).
They listed their needs as furniture, books, cds for audio visual learning, toys/games but most of all, money for rent and utilities and maybe teachers’ salaries or training.
SOHOM has contributed to rent and utilities since 2010 and volunteered its time by visiting once a month and sharing information from its member countries via maps, pictures, games, dance, music and activities.
Time: 6:30 pm
Venue: Golden Screen Cinema Pavillion level 6, Kuala Lumpur
Ticket price: RM50 (per ticket)
