Malaysia has been ranked number 5 in the 2011 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, which also announced Thailand as the favourite destination for expatriates without children.

The results are followed by Canada in second place, South Africa in third place and the Philippines in the fourth. The annual survey looks at three main criteria namely Economics, Experience and Raising Children Abroad. Thailand excelled by topping the charts under the Experience and Economics segments.

The HSBC survey is the largest of its kind, with 3,385 expatriates throughout the world answering questions on life overseas based on 55 criteria.

Under the Experience category, a majority of the top ten countries are found to be countries that have large English-speaking populations.

South East Asian countries dominate the top rankings as the favoured expatriate destinations.
