I started work a few days before Christmas 1983 and was put straight onto the overnight shift.

Starting out in journalism as a cadet reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald, I had a nagging attraction to the glitzy world of television.

My unofficial title was a grand one: I was the assistant to the assistant Letters’ Editor.

We fall anonymously between the cracks of the narcissistic, navel-gazing Baby Boomers and the money-minded and materialistic Generation X.
