Shinmapo Korean BBQ

It’s been a long time since I last had a Korean barbecue meal – the last good one I had was over a decade ago in Korea itself. So, when the opportunity to try Shinmapo – one of Korea’s most popular barbecue chains – came up, I was excited to see if it would live up to the hype.

It wasn’t quite dinnertime on the Friday we visited, but this four-month-old outlet was already bustling. We recommend the Signature Sets for a comprehensive experience – these have all their favourites like pork skirt, collar and belly, a mixed grilled platter of mushrooms, prawns and pineapple, along with a peppery kimchi-based ‘army stew’ (budae jjigae) and side dishes.

You don’t need to lift a finger – once you’ve ordered, the service team snaps into a well-practiced whirlwind of action, setting up the charcoal barbecue and laying out the refillable side dishes. They’ll even grill your food for you. Three types of condiments are provided: gochujang (soybean-based chilli paste), sesame oil with salt and soy sauce with chilli.

The salad with yuzu dressing and the signature kimchi egg crust were tasty, but we were impatient for the main affair. The seafood was fresh – the prawns go best with the light soy sauce, while our added order of scallops on the shell had a good spicy kick to them from the chopped chillies sprinkled on top.

The pork is the star here though, and after trying it, we can see why: it was excellent. Every cut was tender, juicy and impeccably flavoured by that addictive sweet-savoury Korean marinade, made even better if you wrap it in lettuce. The pork collar is hands down my favourite!

If you will order beef, spring for the good stuff and get the marinated Australian beef short ribs. My experience with beef is that it’s usually either slightly tough or chewy, but this was an eye-opener for me: flavourful and tender, the meat basically melted in my mouth.

If you’re searching for a delicious Korean barbecue experience at affordable prices, Shinmapo is the way to go. We’re fans and will definitely be back!
