Jake's Charbroiled Steaks, Bukit Damansara1 Aug 2011
Upon close scrutiny, the ambience at Jake’s Charbroil Steaks in Medan Damansara isn’t perfect. The lighting is dim and the place is cramped and clearly in need of refurbishment. However, it’s likely you won’t even notice these flaws. The active hustle-and-bustle of the friendly staff and the fully occupied tables provide a life and energy of their own and, as the night goes on and your dinner is served, you realise why Jake’s has managed to survive for so long—the food is brilliant; which is unsurprising given that the restaurant has had over twenty years to perfect their dishes.
Every one of the appetisers I have ever tried there (which admittedly is plenty) has never failed to impress me. The oxtail soup is to die for, the Mexican nachos, to kill, and the escargots are beyond belief; soaked in a garlic sauce, they are refreshingly unique and distinct.
Then to the mains; it’s not called Jake’s Charbroil Steak for nothing and the beef does not disappoint. Consistently cooked to your exact specifications, the category “The Meat Station”, in the menu, has 13 different steak options to choose from. For those who don’t enjoy beef the way I do, don’t worry; there are plenty of alternatives ranging from lamb to lobster, and from what I know, it’s all good.
With a twenty-year-old outlet located near Bangsar, Jake’s has had plenty of time to build its reputation and it is not a quiet place; service can take a while and you may find yourself waiting for a table. It may be a worthwhile idea to pay a visit to their other outlet in Starhill Gallery where it’s usually quieter. Whether at one branch or the other, a meal at Jake’s is not the light type; if you go, make sure you’re equipped with a good appetite and an empty stomach.
