Classic Rebel

As you make a turn into Jalan University, you’ll be surprised to find this quaint little restaurant located just behind the row of shops facing the main road. Classic Rebel emanates warmth with its compact interior decked out with tables for company, a side bar for those who prefer to dine solo, as well as a cosy al fresco dining area complete with cushion and pillows.

The restaurant prides itself with its sharing platters or tapas – a variety of smaller portioned dishes - ranging from Eggs On Toast, Mushroom Pizza and Salmon Gravlax. We tried their Salmon Gravlax, consisting a platter of coriander salmon gravlax, dill, citrus, hash brown potatoes, onion, parsley, sour cream, pickled onion and fennel salad. Though they do serve up a mean hash brown, the crunchy potatoes could have been a great complement if the salmon was fresher.

The highlight of my meal was their Lamb Confit – spaghetti, lamb confit, cilantro, caramelised onion and roasted tomato. Make sure to have a mouthful of spaghetti with the lamb, onion and tomato to enjoy the dish at its fullest. The flavour from the meat married with the spaghetti is a taste that spells ‘comfort’.

Ending our dinner with a sweet note was a piece of their Brownie Cookie sandwiched with strawberry filling. There are three other flavours to choose from if you’re looking for a sugar-rush.

Our meals were washed down with their fancy mocktails – Juicy Julep and Big Pink. Juicy Julep is a blend of pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, ginger ale and mint leaves; while Big Pink consist of Sprite, bubble gum syrup and lychee. I recommend the latter beverage.

One thing to note, don’t take it for granted that Classic Rebel would be empty on a weeknight. Make a reservation and secure yourself a seat, just to be on the safe side, whether you’re coming in with company or a date.
