Having established that the correct pronunciation for the restaurant was more like “Vinner-ear” than “Vin-nearree- ah” (the latter sounding a little too like venereal to make for a comfortable dining experience), we sat down for our meal and soon made a few more important findings, most notably: this is a seriously excellent restaurant.

We began with some delicious, fresh bruschetta, cecina ham with rock melon (“a beautiful pairing” said my friend), a divine black angus beef carpaccio and two more unusual selections in venison bresaola and goat salami.

I’m not usually all that brave when I order out but there is something about the restaurant which gives the diner a sense of comfort and that you’re in safe hands. That could well be because the people behind this outlet at the back of the ground floor of Bangsar Shopping Centre used to be involved with Neroteca, a favourite for KL foodies.

Whether that is so or not, the fact that this restaurant has everything you could reasonably demand from a top quality Italian eatery is indisputable. Lovely atmosphere, friendly service, a very good wine list with lots of Italian reds (although we opted for a, well two, Chilean Cabernet Shiraz Zinfandel), and an innovative, fresh and authentic menu.

The pizzas are perfectly cooked with delicious, crisp base. The pasta is light and evidently made that day. Fish and meat dishes are exciting and unique, such as the duck and foie gras sausages, which while never something I would order, made my husband’s evening.

Rounding the meal off was a tiramisu. And not just any tiramisu but about as good as any in the city. I was initially disappointed that I chose the one with coconut and rum rather than the traditionally made dish with marsala and espresso ristretto. Thankfully, my lovely husband was able to be ‘persuaded’ that he should ‘share’ (i.e. give) it with me.

Vineria.IT may not initially strike KL diners bored with Italian fare as anything new or unusual.

However, it pays to persevere and after a hugely enjoyable night we will certainly be going back soon.
