Tucked cozily in a heritage hotel called Campbell House on the famous buzzing Campbell street, is “Il Bàcaro”, a place to enjoy authentic Italian dishes with a friendly priced selection of wine to match.
Owners Nardya and Roberto have based the establishment on a traditional Venetian back street tavern, offering authentic treats freshly made in the kitchen, such as pasta, bread, sauces and desserts, strictly all family tested and approved recipes.
The ambiance is simple and characteristically minimal. There are tables inside away from the hungry diners that come for lunch or dinner and you can hear friendly banter all over the room. Usually the opening chatter revolves around the food presentation with noisy delights of “ooohs” and then “mmmms” once the food touches the palate.
For a light meal start off with an antipasti of rocket, sundry tomatoes and grilled vegetable salad, crispy and refreshing to help you cope with the tropical climate of Penang island.
For the main, choose the Gnocchi with Fungi or flirt over to the list of pizza offerings. For pizza lovers there are some classical choices available, like the Napoletana with anchovies, Margherita or a fancy Gorgonzola with walnuts and pears.
On my second visit, ceremoniously I ordered the Vongole al Pepe, screamingly scrumptious and exquisitely delicious, the vongole is served like a little mountain on a plate and a side dish for the shells and is stewed perfectly in its juices of herb, pepper and white wine.
My personal favorite for the main course is the Pasta al Salmone with a tease of Caviar drenched in Vodka Cream. The colors are amazing, pink from the Salmon, Black pearls of Caviar and Creamy based Vodka. All chased down with a chilled slinky glass of Prosecco of course.
The staff are very friendly if you ask each of them for their recommendations on dessert, you will get six different answers. I would tell you to try them all, each time you visit and start with Pannacotta al Cioccolato or Vaniglia or the Salame al cioccolato.
