Healy Macís Irish Bar & Restaurant, Penang1 Apr 2011
For many years we Irish and other discerning imbibers bemoaned the absence of a proper Irish pub in our adopted city and were jealous of those in KL.
Healy Mac’s has just opened in Straits Quay with ambitions to provide us with one sample of the genre. With real wood floors, bars and furniture the place feels authentic and the manager, Richard—a long way from Tipperary—is there to ensure the quality of the beer and food are up to standard.
An important aspect of any Irish bar is the quality of the draught Guinness, and at Healy Mac’s the Guinness is superb.
Four of us went for an early dinner on Sunday and enjoyed the comfortable and convivial atmosphere. The food menu has a large enough selection to satisfy most tastes but not so long as to confuse.
We chose to share one duck confit and one garlic bread with cheese for starters. Both of which were very good.
For main course, New Zealand rack of lamb was full of flavours with rosemary and jus. One was ordered well done and the other rare, and both were cooked exactly as required.
The Australian rib eye steaks were also cooked to perfection and were very tender. Oxtail potato cakes and spinach accompanied the steaks and were also delicious!
