Restoran Ipoh Old Town, Bangsar
1 Dec 2011
Don’t know your wok hei from your dai chow? Doesn’t matter. Restoran Ipoh Old Town will look after you and give you the feeling that wherever you come from in the world, in some sense, Ipoh is your spiritual home.
Don’t be confused between this delightful shop-lot eatery and the extensive chain outlet of a similar name. Restoran Ipoh Old Town is all about home-cooking and freshly prepared dishes that are authentic and showcases the best flavours of Malaysia.
Being inside Lucky Garden next to Bangsar Baru (there are other outlets on Jalan Klang Lama and in Taman Danau Desa), the owners have grown accustomed to foreigners visiting over the years so service is outstanding.
Whether through logic or stubbornness, they don’t sacrifice any of the flavours or spiciness in their cuisine, rather guiding newer, gentler tastebuds to the items on their menu that will be better appreciated before suggesting spicier and richer dishes once diners feel more at home.
And feeling like home is the restaurant’s greatest ability and strongest selling point. With large round tables, it makes for an ideal setting whether with friends of visiting relatives looking for somewhere “really Malaysian”.
Order up bowls and plates of their sweet and sour (pork is a speciality – yes it’s non-halal), spicy kam heong chicken, an array of stir-fried vegetables and the ubiquitous chicken rice – Restoran Ipoh Old Town do one of the best in KL in my opinion – and you are good to go for a nice, long meal where the chat can flow and every member of the family, young and old, has a great time in the very best Malaysian tradition.
