My Elephant, Sri Hartamas
1 Dec 2011
Great restaurant discoveries are strangely not dissimilar to bad things: they rarely happen in the singular. Thus it was that hot on the heels of my very recent discovery of the marvelous Surisit Thai Kopitiam in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, My Elephant’s new branch in Sri Hartamas – the original is located in Section 17 – soon after made itself known to me.
It may be new but word has spread, fast, and mealtimes see the sedate but comfortably furnished restaurant veritably bursting at the seams. Considering the consistency and quality of the food, its popularity is hardly surprising. There are many familiar items jostling for attention on the menu, from the omnipresent fish cakes and Thai green chicken curry to pad Thai and yum woon sen. However, it’s the rather less conventional dishes that really sparkle at this gem of an eatery.
The duck curry with lychee and dragonfruit is an intrepid departure from the usual garden variety of curry, but the velvety curry is perfectly juxtaposed by the tart sweetness of the fruit and the succulent slices of duck.
A salt-baked fish yields flaky, moist and flavoursome flesh whilst the white Thai kangkung with chicken and prawns is feistier than an irate Columbian matriarch on a bad hair day. Similarly, the gai tod gratiam was perfectly fried and seasoned and deliriously moreish, whilst the phad woon sen was fried to perfection and seduced me into succumbing to a second equally tasty portion.
Thanks to fairly brisk service, reasonable prices, and more than comfortably adequate seats on which to plant one’s derriere, it’s highly unlikely that My Elephant’s popularity is going to wane anytime in the conceivable future, so with that please bear two things in mind: visit said restaurant post haste, but remember to call and make a reservation before you leave the house.
