Carmen’s Vinothek

Proper wine bars are few and far between in KL. Sure, most places will serve you wine, but when it comes to properly-served bottles, by people who know what they’re talking about, enthusiasts can be left wanting.

Which is where Carmen’s Vinothek steps in. Claiming to be KL’s first “self-serve” wine bar, Carmen’s aims to be the place to both introduce people to wine and keep seasoned drinkers more than satisfied.

With a huge variety of bottles held in the bar’s wine dispenser (basically a posh vending machine on the wall), Carmen’s does a good job. Over 20 wines—from a range of regions, counties and grapes—are available for tasting in 25ml portions.

Each one costs less than RM10 and is the perfect size for deciding whether or not you want a full glass. And if you need some guidance—quite likely considering the daunting choice—head somellier Carmen Lim (yep, the Carmen) is on hand to point you in the right direction.

However, there is more to Carmen’s than wine. You don’t come here for the food but the offerings are actually very good. Intended to complement the wine, the range of finger foods and snacks includes oysters, pates, and a superb selection of chocolate and cheese.

If you leave here disappointed, it’s certainly not for lack of choice or quality.
