Exclusive With MasterChef Adam Liaw

Expatriate Lifestyle was invited to catch up with the winner of Masterchef Australia Series 2, Adam Liaw, who was back visiting his roots (his father is Malaysian-born).

The very friendly and charismatic Adam was in KL this week, and we briefly caught up with him at Sid’s Pub, Bangsar South to ask him three questions over a pint at the end of a long day talking (and eating) food.

Expatriate Lifestyle: Have you had a chance to eat much on the trip?

Adam Liaw: Oh yes! Today we’ve had five meals already. And they’re all huge. I can literally feel my shirt getting tighter as the day has gone on!

EL: You’re here partly to promote your book (Two Asian Kitchens). You split the book into “Old Kitchen” and “New Kitchen”, a clever way to share classic and new recipes. Which do you prefer?

AL: Thanks. I wanted to show some of the dishes I’ve grown up with alongside newer ones, I love both old and new.

EL: And finally, in Australia, what is the quality of Malaysian food like? Is it anything like as good as here?

AL: No way! (laughs) There are some good places but it’s a bit strange in Sydney, where I live, as the better food is found at the smaller and less successful restaurants. It’s like the people who know about running a big restaurant are not as knowledgeable about Malaysian food. There are some good places, though, mainly out in the suburbs.
