“You’ll have a long weekend away, not too far away, but one that takes you somewhere new, somewhere you haven’t been,” the woman says looking at a deck of tarot cards that are lined up on the table. “I also think that you’re happy with the meal you’ve just had,” she says assuredly. I looked at her puzzled: how could this woman know so much, it’s uncanny. And then she tells me I’ve got a little mayonnaise on my cheek. I guess that would give it away wouldn’t it.

Then of course, it helps that the tarot card reader is actually working in the restaurant, she’s actually part of this quirky eatery’s staff and theme. Sixty Nine Bistro, the retro eatery that fits in nicely with the new art cafes like Palate Palette or Cloth & Clef, has just opened another outlet in Damansara Perdana in PJ (its first is downtown), bringing its peculiar brand of charm to new audiences. “I was working in Singapore and I thought ‘hey, I have some interesting ideas, I want to go home’ and starting a restaurant was my way of doing that. So I brought my furniture ideas and Hong Kong based menu and started Bistro 69,” says Wilson Chai, Bistro 69’s owner/operator. Bistro 69’s decor concepts reflect an attention to the unusual, the casual, the fully retro with groovy lamps from the 70s dotted on bended wood tables and wallpapers placed on walls to accentuate them. The place accomplishes its mission to look like a cool Greenwich village haunt. Hands down, Bistro 69 is a great place to hang and yes there’s free wifi.

But what about the food, how does that measure up? On value Bistro 69’s dishes deliver, most mains are under RM15 and many under RM10 which is fantastic price points. One of their signature dishes, Hong Kong style Cheesy Rice, is a filling and tasty little concoction as is the Spicy Chicken and they have good appetisers of Tau Foo Pok and others. But the food – while certainly adequate – doesn’t thrill. No, one comes to Bistro 69 for ambience, to chill with friends, to have nice drinks and some cheap and interesting food, it’s a good package but the food is not the main driver. Still, the place is great and consider it your good fortune to find yourself here.
